Police Reports: Shoplifting at Rite Aid, an Internet Scam
Officers are investigating the theft of baby formula and batteries from Rite Aid and an Internet scam that bilked a Monroe woman out of $2,300.
Shoplifting at Rite Aid
Two cans of Enfamil baby formula and 18 24-packs of AA Duracell batteries were reported stolen from Rite Aid pharmacy, 508 Monroe Turnpike, at 3:01 Sunday afternoon.
Police said a white man, who was about 6'4 and wearing dark clothing, black socks and sandals, filled a hand basket with the items and had stopped to ask the cashier questions on two occasions before leaving the store without paying for the merchandise.
A store employee jotted down the license plate number of the gray or tan Ford SUV style vehicle the man drove off in — heading north on Route 111. But police said the number came back with no information. Two other white males were seen in the vehicle, according to the report.
The total estimated value of the stolen items is $31.98 for the baby formula and $359.82 for the batteries. Police are investigating the incident.
One Payment, No Car
A 45-year-old Edgewood Road woman told police she lost $2,300 in a scam by a Rochester, Minn., woman selling a 2000 VW Jetta on Craigs List.
On Jan. 12, she contacted the seller by email and was told the woman had an uncle who worked at a shipping yard, so she could get a break on the shipping. The victim was told to wire $2,300 to a Google Checkout agent via Western Union. The man's address was in Michigan, police said.
She wired the money from Big Y, 535 Main Street. By Jan. 27, the woman still did not get the car, so she called the shipping company, then Google Support, and neither had a record of the transaction.
Police said an Internet search showed con artists using Google Checkout for schemes involving a vehicle is a popular method of online fraud.

In reality, they probably $50 in batteries, given Rite Aid's markups.

There is a guy in Nigeria who might be able to help with the shipping of your car.
