Why: To let these six men know that they represent you, and your opinion matters.
OK, that's a lie. It might not be fun. But it is important.
The Board of Finance is holding a public hearing this week on the budget. These six individuals are the last stop before the budget gets sent to the voters. They could add funds in, take them away, whatever they want. They're supposed to do what they think the people in the town want. But how will they know what the people in town want if they don't ask us?
Consider yourself asked.
The great thing about our repesentative government here in town is that it is totally dependent on participation. The Board of Eduation, the Town Council, and the Board of Finance, as well as the First Selectman, all have a chance to put their mark on the budget. They're supposed to do this with you, the voter, in mind. What do you want and need from our town? What is your priority, how do you feel your money should be spent?
People complain all of the time about our taxes, our services, our budget. But at the end of the day, the budget we get here in Monroe is the budget we create. If we don't go out and tell our representatives on each board how we feel, they won't know. And then they'll guess at what you want. Sometimes, they'll guess wrong. Maybe more than sometimes.
We're all busy. We all have families and jobs and responsibilities. But if you could just take one hour out of your evening on Wednesday and come to this meeting, then you can be part of the conversation.
The added bonus is these hearings actually can be kind of entertaining. :)
