Ct. State Rep. Hovey an Absolute Embarrassment

Letter to the Editor:

Three weeks after the Sandey Hook shootings, Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her astronaut husband Mark Kelly came to Newtown to help the community heal. Struggling to walk but sure footed in her purpose, Ms. Giffords met privately with victim's families to console them in their unimaginable grief. Gabby Giffords is one of those few people who through personal experience can actually empathize with the Sandy Hook victims.

Just two years ago during a mass shooting in Arizona she sustained a gun shot wound to the head that left her with impaired speech, problems with vision and a partially paralyzed right side. Still with the help of many physical therapists and her service dog Nelson by her side she continues on and reminds us all that hope and courage will always triumph over violence and hate.

Her courageous visit to Newtown was warmly received but not by all. While Ms. Giffords was meeting with grieving families, Sandy Hook's State Representative and Assistant Republican Leader, DebraLee Hovey was in Florida broadcasting on Facebook: "Gabby Gifford stay out of my towns!!"

Despite the fact that Gifford's visit was closed to the press and that it was also attended by Newtown's Republican First Selectman, Pat Llordra, Hovey felt slighted that she was not invited, so in a fit of megalomania she declared Newtown and Monroe as being "her towns" and ordered Gabby Giffords to "stay out".

Hovey's statements are in keeping with the boorish bullying behavior that has been part of her camp for some time.  Local residents have seen it before, from the time her husband stormed into the local Democratic headquarters shouting and knocking over campaign materials, to the time when Ms. DebraLee placed a toilet bowl in the middle of her front yard to intimidate neighbors that had alerted town officials about home improvements she had made without permits and without paying appropriate taxes.

Her 47% moment in time has been long in coming, but how her arrogance has been exposed statewide and even nationally and has brought embarrassment to our entire community.

In the days following her outrageous Facebook pronouncement, Hovey offered a disingenuous, self-serving, pseudo apology that in the opinion of most is unacceptable. Because Ms. Hovey's actions are so far removed from who we are as a community, she should resign her position as State Representative. This is the only appropriate way now for Ms. Hovey to say "I'm sorry".

Thank you everyone for your comments. Carl - will try not to be offended by your "anyone withRead More half a brain" comment. I am dismayed to hear Dawn that you have made this effort and been turned down by the town and police department (it's not uncommon for me to see the police speeding up and down Moose Hill Road too!) Glad to hear, though, that I am not alone in seeing a need for people to get a grip on the road. Slow down. Hang up. Comply with stop signs and stop lights. Be courteous.

I have been tail-gated so many times - everywhere in Monroe - I drive a little over the posted speedRead More limit BUT I respect the people walking (most of the time in the wrong direction) and bike riders (they too ride in the wrong direction. HANG UP THE PHONE - DON'T PIGGY BACK thru a stop sign, and learn the right of way rule. AND STOP SIGNS mean S T O P!!! Robin lane people are good for running stop signs. And Pepper Street is 25 mph - NOT 45 or 50!!! Walkers & runners FACE TRAFFIC - Bike riders RIDE WITH TRAFFIC. AND one more thing - don't block the drive ways if there is a stop light - and someone coming in or out - let them and move on. THANKS for letting me get this off my chest!!!!!

Good luck Laura, My husband and I tried to get some on Purdy Hill Road from Rt.111 to Rt.25. theyRead More said they can't do it. I have asked numerous times to have a police officer sit in Farmview or use our driveway, said it's too dangerous, go figure. Tired of drivers around town having no respect for other drivers and people walking on side of road. It gets to the point that I don't even want to leave my house. Get a clue people slow down, stay off phones, it's not hard.
