Moore: State Must Prioritize Transportation Safety, Urges Action In Trumbull

July 9, 2014 –Democratic State Senate candidate Marilyn Moore is urging state transportation officials to expedite the installation of a traffic light just north of the Route 111 and Route 25 intersection and to address other traffic concerns where numerous auto collisions have occurred following last year’s opening of a shopping center on Monroe Turnpike in Trumbull.

In a letter to Trumbull Police Chief Thomas Kiely, following concerns about traffic congestion and accidents, a state traffic engineering official wrote, “The peak-hour turning movement counts at the Chips/Edge Fitness site drive confirm that existing site-generated traffic is significantly higher than originally anticipated.”

Trumbull and state data shows numerous traffic accidents in the area the past year.

“All too often when it comes to transportation safety there’s been a lot of talk and no action from state officials,” says Moore. “This is another example of the state’s misplaced priorities. The state is paying out hundreds of millions of dollars on corporate giveaways, but isn’t prioritizing citizen transportation safety on state roads.”

Moore pointed out that state lawmakers have raided Connecticut’s transportation fund to pay routine obligations instead of addressing needed rail and state roadway improvements.

Last March State Senator Anthony Musto told the Connecticut Post, "We all make compromises that we don't want to make.”

“A comprise at the risk of public safety is not a compromise, it’s irresponsible,” says Moore. “It’s time for the state to get its priorities straight.”
