American Legion Retires Flags in Ceremony [VIDEO]

American Flags were burned during a flag retirement ceremony at Stepney Fire Station No. 1 on Thursday afternoon.

A small crowd gathered on the field at Stepney Firehouse No. 1, 88 Main Street, on a sunny Thursday afternoon. It was Flag Day, and Victor Yanosy, commander of the American Legion Sippin-Winspur Post 176 in Monroe, led a flag retirement ceremony for close to 800 American Flags.

The Legion was joined by The Knights of Columbus Council 5987, which provided the Color Guard, and Boy Scout Troops 62 and 63 of Monroe. DebraLee Hovey (R-112th) attended as a dignitary and Ray Ganser served as Chaplain.

The worn, unserviceable flags were gathered from drop off points at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, the Monroe Senior Center and in the Police Department lobby. Big Y Supermarket also participated, collecting 125 flags, according to Yanosy.

The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937.
