Foreign Exchange Students Need Host Families this Summer

High school students from Germany and Russia are hoping to brush up on their English by staying as guests at homes in the area this summer — and some will soon be on their way to Monroe.

Kelia Bergin and Lynn Lewis of Massachusetts represented Education First's Educational Homestay Programs last Friday, signing up willing families at the Monroe Farmers' Market.

Bergin said the program is based in Trumbull and led by Harold Zawadski.

"It's a short-term cultural immersion exchange," she said. "They're taking English lessons from us and staying with local families. They do speak English already. They're coming to practice."

The visits will be from around July 24 to Aug. 19.

"The program is starting very soon, so we hope to have enough people by then," Bergin said. "We have 14 students to place still."

A family could accommodate up to four students if they choose to. Those who are interested should call Harold Zawadski at 203-258-8585 or email him at h.zawadski@snet.net.

Education First is a non-profit organization.

"It's about breaking down cultural barriers and broadening people's world view," Bergin said.
