Gift Basket Raffle Supports Our Veterans

Janet Marino, president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 176, was among the women selling long strips of raffle tickets at the organization's Christmas party at Roberto's Restaurant, 505 Main Street, Wednesday night. Gift baskets on display in front of the Banquet Room were filled with prizes and all of the proceeds will go to a good cause.

"This money will be used to help our veterans," Marino said. "We'll buy food cards for Stop & Shop and Big Y. We help support whatever financial and food needs they have."

Though Monroe's military veterans are the primary beneficiaries of the auxiliary's fundraising efforts, Marino said her unit also makes donations to the Wounded Warriors, the National Guard in Stratford and The Home Of The Brave on Park Avenue in Bridgeport.

Marino was grateful to the local businesses and private citizens donating items for the gift baskets, including Glen-Ro Spirit Shoppe, Wines Unlimited, Paul's Haircutters, Bella Rosa Pizzeria Ristorante, Roberto's and A New Beginning, which donated three driveway plowings for this winter.

Those wishing to make a donation or to join American Legion Auxiliary Unit 176 Monroe should call Marion Callo, auxiliary secretary, 203-261-2432.
