Griffin Hospital Aids Women in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Griffin Hospital has a table at the Monroe Farmers' Market to inform patrons about free mammograms that are available for women who do not have health insurance.

"I'm trying to get the word out because Connecticut has the second highest rate of breast cancer in the country and only 17% of newly diagnosed women have a family history of breast cancer," said Maggie Sessa, a registered nurse at Griffin.

"I remind women to get their mammograms and inform them that we have money available," Sessa said.

If something is found after a mammogram, Sessa said The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness helps women to pay for a biopsy and other medical care.

The volunteers at Griffin Hospital's table also give medical referrals.

"If you live in Torrington and don't go to Griffin Hospital I can refer you to wherever you want to go," Sessa said. "Today, one woman here needed a screening for skin cancer and asked me about it. I told her about a free skin screening at the Oxford Senior Center."

While at the farmers' market, Sessa said she also provides information about other health issues and medications.

She is always at the Monroe Farmers' Market, depending on the weather. The market is held on the Monroe Town Green every Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.
