Newtown Memorials and Events Being Considered, Planned

Several community members and those from the surrounding area are sharing their ideas for ways to honor the memory of those who were killed on Dec. 14.

As prayer vigils continue and families prepare to bury their loved ones, members of the Newtown community and surrounding towns continue to be buoyed by the strength and generosity of their neighbors.

While appreciative of the kind words and offerings being sent from around the country and the world, the community is focused on ways to help itself and honor the memories of those it lost. From memorial funds and bake sales to 5Ks and memorial gardens, there are many events and ideas being hatched through heartfelt discussions.

Here is a list of some of those events scheduled and projects being considered. If you know of others, please include them in the comments below.

Bake Sale – Monday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Friday from 2 p.m. through 11 p.m. a bake sale will be held at Danbury Hospital to benefit the family of Emilie Parker, 6, who died in the Sandy Hook School shooting on Dec. 14. Emilie’s father, Robert Parker, is a physician assistant at the hospital. Various donated items will also be raffled for a fee. Strides for Sandy Hook Memorial 5k - Join Newtown in remembrance of the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary with the Strides for Sandy Hook Memorial 5k. More details will be coming soon.

Sandy Hook School Memorial Concert – A concert is being planned to help benefit the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook School shooting, as well as the creation of a memorial for the tragedy to be placed in the town. If you are interested please contact: sandyhookschoolbenefitconcert@gmail.com

Sandy Hook Memorial Garden – This project is described as “a peaceful garden of sacred ground” and a “wonderful way to gather together and have a healing process for the years to come.” Now they just need a location and plenty of donated materials and time.
