The Woods Are Alive With…Hunters Shooting With Bows and Arrows

Monroe residents, especially children, need to know where not to go and to wear bright colored clothing.

Another hunting season opened in Monroe Sept. 15 and the prey is deer. But, this time the weapon of choice is a high-powered bow and arrows.

Hunters are allowed to hunt on state leased property, hydraulic property and any private property after securing written permission.  There is no plot of land too small and no distance restrictions between hunter and prey. The standard hunting distance is 30-50 yards with today's high powered gear.

Areas known to be open to hunters include public land in East Village, near Garter Road, Hersam Hill Road, Stanley Road, Judd Road, along Route 25 and on several Monroe farms, among others.

According to Animal Control Officer Ed Risko there are very few hunting accidents by reputable hunters because the deer must be in "visible range." However, he recommends that anyone venturing into the woods use caution and wear bright orange or yellow clothing while making their presence known, perhaps with loud talking or singing.

Hunters will be at their stations or out stalking prey a half hour before sunrise to sunset throughout the season.
