CT NOFA Second Annual City Farm and Garden Tour

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut is excited to announce the Second Annual City Farm and Garden Tour in New Haven on August 6, 2011.  CT NOFA has arranged for nineteen farm and garden sites on the tour that highlight farmers and gardeners’ creativity in transforming vacant lots, lawns, school yards and parking areas into green spaces that grow food for families and restaurants.  On the day of the tour, from 10 am to 3 pm, participants may freely visit the sites to observe different models of urban agriculture including backyards transformed to peaceful gardens, community gardens where tools and ideas are shared, and school farms where students learn about agriculture and the environment.

The $20 admission will purchase a ticket and a tour brochure which includes a map, a list of addresses and descriptions of the tour sites.  Participants can present their tour booklet to select local restaurants for discounts on lunch and dinner.  Gardeners and farmers will be on hand at all sites to answer questions, offer gardening tips and maybe share some New Haven-fresh produce!  CT NOFA invites participants to scheduled gardening workshops and activities hosted by our gardeners and to a 3:00 pm film screening of the urban agriculture documentary “Truck Farm” at Common Ground High School.

CT NOFA is proud to showcase the impressive scale of farming in New Haven producing anything from peas and grapes to honey and goats.  The city farming movement is vital to reform of the food system, reduction of its ecological footprint, and improvement of quality of food available to inner city populations.  The tour’s city farms and gardens may seem small, but together they play a large role in providing nutritious food to the New Haven region and make the city a leader in urban farming.
