They Get By With a Little Help from Their Friends

Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library's annual Book Sale is at Masuk this weekend. The organization funds equipment and programs at the library

Readers can find a great deal on a good book this weekend, while helping the town library at the same time. Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library is having a book sale at Masuk High School from Saturday, July 9, to July 13.

Margaret Borchers, director of Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, said the event will be in the air conditioned school cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the sale.

"There is plenty of parking and professional signs for each category, history, science, poetry and cookbooks," Borchers said Friday. "Fiction fans can find books by their favorite author alphabetically."

Admission to the book sale is free, however, "early birds" arriving between 9 and 10 a.m. pay $10 at the door.

The annual books sale is Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library's largest fundraiser.

"All profits benefit the library," Borchers said. "It funds most of the children's programs, the magic shows, the animal exhibits — all of those things come from the book sale."

Friends donates all of the refreshments for library events and funds Pizza Movie Night, according to Borchers.

Last year, Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library bought six laptop computers for the library, which Borchers said have been used for children, teens and adult programs. The computers can also be lent out for the day at the reference desk.

"We've been pulling these out a lot more times than I thought we would," Borchers said of the laptops.

She said most library patrons probably believe many of the programs are supported by the town budget, when it's actually backed by Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library.

"The Friends don't get enough credit for what they do," Borchers said. "They work really hard."
