Conditioner Treatment: 'It's Like Sunblock for Your Hair'

Sunblock protects skin from the sun's rays while tanning at the beach and hanging out by the pool, but — unless it's under a hat — hair can suffer damage. It can frizz up and dry out, and chlorine can cause the color to fade, according to Lina Buzzelli, a longtime cosmetologist at Phil's Hairstyling, 401 Monroe Turnpike.

"To prevent that, I suggest using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner," Buzzelli said Wednesday.

One brand she recommends is Redken Extreme shampoo/conditioner, which she says is good for distressed hair.

"After use, leave in a conditioner treatment spray when your hair is damp," Buzzelli said. "It's like sunblock for your hair."

She said allowing it to dry naturally will eliminate frizz and protect your hair from the heat of a blowdryer or flat iron.

When hair is already sun-damaged, Buzzelli suggests using a conditioning glaze, which comes in clear or in a color. "A lot of people do that at the end of the summer," she added.

Keratin treatments are another option, but Buzzelli said that can be expensive.

Aside from wearing a fashionable hat to the beach to protect your hair, Buzzelli said women can braid it, so the sun doesn't hit it as much.
