Walmart Coming to Monroe Will Be a 'Supercenter'

The new store will employ approximately 300 people, according to a company spokesman.

Walmart will be coming to Monroe, a company spokesman confirmed Tuesday. And not just any Walmart, but Connecticut’s 12th Supercenter.

The new store — approved for 2 Victoria Drive — will include a supermarket (groceries, produce, meat, dairy and bakery), pharmacy and garden center, according to Walmart Director of Communications – East William Wertz.

The majority of Walmart’s Supercenters are also open 24 hours, though it was not immediately clear whether the Monroe location would hold to that trend.

The company does not have a hard timetable for construction and grand opening yet, Wertz said, though he noted the process generally takes about a year once the plans go through the full approval process.

Wertz also noted that the supercenter will employ some 300 persons, most in full-time positions, and offer “a new, affordable shopping option for the community.”

Walmart currently has 11 Supercenters in Connecticut, 23 general merchandise stores, two Neighborhood Markets and three Sam’s Club centers.

The nearest existing stores are on Bridgeport Ave. in Shelton and New Haven Ave. in Derby.

Do you think the Walmart Supercenter will be a good addition to Monroe?
