Additional Compounding Pharmacy Information

When did pharmacists start customizing medication?

Pharmacists have always custom compounded medication. All medication was custom compounded until the 1940s when aspirin was first manufactured.

What is driving the increased demand for custom compounded medication?

The demand for custom medication continues to rise due to increased physician and consumer awareness of the availability of:

  •  Medications without fillers (i.e. gluten, sugar, lactose, dyes, alcohol and/or preservatives)
  • Alternate medication delivery options that reduce gag reflex, unpleasant taste, stomach upset and systemic reactions (i.e. medicated lollipops, liquid versus tablets, topical gels versus pills)
  • Customized dosing strengths
  • Medications on pharmaceutical manufacturer’s backorder
  • Discontinued manufactured medications due low market demand or low profit margins
