Last Call to Add Soldiers' Names to a Plaque

The names of soldiers from Monroe will be read during the 11 on 11 at 11 ceremony on Stepney Green this Sunday.

Editor's Note: This press release had become lost in the coverage of Hurricane Sandy and the elections, but it's not to late to add more names for Sunday.

It is often said that when a soldier goes off to war they take their home community with them. This, in reverse, is true of the sentiment here in Monroe for our local soldiers — our thoughts and prayers are always with them.

As a tribute to the past and current U.S. service members supporting the current Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Afghanistan wars (Operation Enduring Freedom), we are looking to recognize those service men and women by adding their names to an existing plaque located in the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library.

The plaque was dedicated three years ago through the generosity of the Monroe Rotary Club and designed by Church Hill Classics, a specialty framer, located on Pepper St. in Monroe.

We need your help in obtaining any additional names of veterans and current soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that are not currently listed on the plaque.

Please contact Meg Krasko at MKrasko@charter.net, or Miriam Zalenski at 261-8550, for further information. Our time frame for this project’s completion is November 7, 2012. The name will be placed on the plaque hung in our town library and announced at a service  planned by our local Monroe Veterans on 11/11/12.
