So Monroe, Are You Chicken or Penguins?

2014 Plunge at the Park this Saturday in support of Monroe Special Olympians.

The Monroe Police Department and Special Olympics Connecticut are hosting the 4th annual “Plunge at the Park” Penguin Plunge event at Great Hollow Lake in Wolfe Park Saturday.

Check-in starts at 11 a.m. Saturday and the plunge will commence at 1 p.m. (sharp). A signed waiver form and minimum donation of $50 — whether plunger or chicken — are required before the event begins. (Parent or guardian signature required for plungers under 18.)

Funds raised at this year’s plunge will go toward supporting local Special Olympics athletes and organizers are hoping to exceed last year’s fundraising total of over $7,000.

Anyone who wants to support the cause but doesn’t want to brave the cold waters (or is under 8 years old) can join in by wearing an “I’m a Chicken!” t-shirt and cheering on the plungers from the shore.

“Local businesses, professionals, students, civic groups, law enforcement, and fire and rescue personnel will be donning costumes — rumor has it participants will be wearing penguin and chicken hats! — team jerseys and bathing suits to take the plunge,” organizers said in a release. “Many businesses have graciously donated monetary contributions, food and beverages, services and family friendly items for the Plunge raffle, including gift certificates to local restaurants and sporting events.”

Spectators are also welcome to come enjoy music provided by Johnny Jay Productions, coffee and hot chocolate from Dunkin’ Donuts, chicken soup from Soup Thyme, and chicken wings from Tavern and more!

Food and entertainment will also be available, with music from Johnny Jay Productions, coffee and hot chocolate from Dunkin’ Donuts, chicken soup from Soup Thyme, chicken wings from Tavern and more.

Participants can register on site Saturday or pre-register (encouraged) at the Monroe Plunge at the Park website.
