Celebrating 5 Years of Lions' Football Dominance

Since a group of fourth graders joined forces five years ago, the Monroe Lions youth football team went on to post a perfect 61-0 record in New England play, thrashing opponents by an average score of 38 to 12. The Lions won five league championships, four state championships and four New England championships.

Now eight-graders this season, the Lions are conference champs at 10-0. Head Coach Chris Duffy's team is flying out Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 22 to compete in the national tournament. Two vans will pick up some of the players in the Village Square parking lot on Monroe Turnpike at 7 that night for their trip. The public is welcome to see them off.

On Tuesday night, Town Council members honored the Lions before their meeting and First Selectman Steve Vavrek read a declaration and gave each player a copy.

"We're all proud of you," Vavrek told them.

The first selectman also joked, saying the town is proud of these talented football players because they know none would ever opt to play for outside schools such as St. Joseph and Fairfield Prep over becoming Masuk Panthers.
