'This is What is Real Community. Right Here.'

EASTON — Military veterans from Easton's American Legion Charles L. Ruman Post and Monroe's Sippin-Winspur Post 176 and others attending the 11 at 11 on 11 ceremony on Stepney Green enjoyed a lunch prepared by Girl Scouts at the Easton Senior Center Monday.

"This is what is real community. Right here," said Tony Unger, commander of the American Legion Charles L. Ruman Post. "This is community."

Girl Scouts, Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Boy Scouts and one Cub Scout took visitors' coats and set up the food stations. Mothers prepared the food. And Donna O'Hara of Monroe sang the "Star Spangled Banner".

Among the guests were Canadian Air Force officers Major Jeff Bujold, Master Warrant Officer Sylvain Roy, Capt. Kevin Nickerson and Master Warrant Officer Rod Bergen.

Unger said the officers have been participating in the ceremony for the past few years, adding it's either the only or one of very few events joining U.S. and Canadian veterans.

Lee Hossler of Monroe presented Unger — also a Monroe resident and a member of the Town Council — with a runner on which his wife, Dottie, stitched flags of different military branches as a token of appreciation for his service to his country and for organizing the annual Veterans Day ceremony on the green.

Unger served on the U.S. Coast Guard from 1964 to '93.
