How to Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

Helpful tips on how to make your weight loss goals a reality and information on a free talk about weight loss on Tues., Jan. 22 at Griffin Hospital.

Year after year, weight loss remains the most popular New Year’s Resolution. Unfortunately, research has shown that after six months, fewer than 50 percent of people making resolutions actually stick to their goals. After a year, that number declines to 10 percent. With those odds, you may be wondering how to make your New Year’s resolutions stick.

“Many people often fail to stay true to their commitment because they are looking for a quick fix,” says Dr. Elliot Mathias, weight loss expert and Medical Director at Medi-Weightloss® of Shelton. “However, there is no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to weight loss. You didn’t gain the weight overnight. Don’t expect to lose it overnight.”

A lifestyle change and a lifetime of commitment to this healthier lifestyle are necessary for lasting weight loss. Here are tips from Dr. Mathias to help you transition into a healthier lifestyle and lose the weight you’ve resolved to drop:

  • Start a Food Journal
  • Control Portions
  • Enlist Support
  • Get Moving
  • Set Goals
  • Get Professional Help
