Civic Duty

It is our Civic Duty to give our voice and vote in our democracy.

I was looking for a new iPad app the other day when I came accross one from the The Center on Congress at Indiana University called "Civic Quotes."

The Civic Quotes project includes 64 notable quotations – from a variety of U.S. government leaders over the years – that cover four main topics: representative democracy, role and impact of government, democratic process/compromise, and citizen participation.

They also have a website where you can also experience the quotes.  It is a wonderful resource, giving us great words to ponder, where we can also learn about the person who gave us the particular quote.  It helps us put their words in context, along with a picture to help set the scene.

This project is part of our Teaching with Primary Sources at the Center on Congress at Indiana University program, funded by a grant from the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources program.

As we prepare ourselves for the 2012 Presidential Election, it is a good for us to remember where we have come from and where we are headed.  One of those quoted, reminds us that our participation is important.

“People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote - a very different thing.” ~ Walter H. Judd

It is up to us to make our voices heard, not only for ourselves but for those who do not have a voice.  We need to speak on issues, we need to get out and vote.  It is part of our civic duty.

And in all of this, we must use civility in how we treat those who do not agree with us.  Nobody will listen to us if we use a fist to make our points.  We need to offer our voice and our vote and allow others to do the same.

It is our democracy and it is what we make it.

"Let each person do his or her part. If one citizen is unwilling to participate, all of us are going to suffer. For the American idea, though it is shared by all of us, is realized in each one of us." ~ Barbara Jordan

I agree with your article 100% and appreciate the topic. It is also very appropriate during budget season as well.

Excuse me, MICHELLE, it was nice of you to comment here, but perhaps would have been MOST appropriate to comment on the budget article where you are called out for your absence. Every TC member should have been present !!!

As a fan of Mr. Huber's contributions here on Patch, it is disheartening when posters ignore the intent of his message which is to practice decency and civility with others. Sigh...

Not sure what you are referring to. I have been at every budget workshop. I had to come in very late one night as I commute from Hartford and don't usually leave work until 6pm. Starting meetings at 6:30 is difficult for people who work over an hour away. But I am glad you think my presence makes a difference.

Mitchell, you do so much more for your cause when you're civil.

Thank you all for your comments. I appreciate the effort and time that members of the Town Council and other town committees give to Monroe with their own workload and family.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.

It was a sunny day with bright yellow flowers growing in front of the gazebo, but you can't see thatRead More from how it was positioned. I'll eventually be able to change the home background myself. But not yet unfortunately. You're right, though. It would be nicer to have the leaves on the trees etc.
