Hawk Lands on Girl's Shoulder, Believed to Have West Nile

A woman told an officer that a hawk flew out of the woods on Wiltan Drive Sept. 7, landed on her daughter's shoulder and messed around with the ribbon in her hair before flying off. The child was not injured, but the next day the woman found the hawk's dead body in her yard.

Monroe Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said the bird, tentatively identified as a Red Shoulder Hawk, had displayed behavior consistent with West Nile Virus.
