Homeowner Scores Photos of Black Bear's Journey Through Monroe

A Black Bear's trip through town caused quite a stir on May 30, as it made its way toward Easton, and one homeowner on Echowoods Circle managed to snap several photos of the animal as it drank from a Hummingbird feeder in his yard (See the photos with this story.)

The string of sightings began when the bear was seen crossing Hammertown Road at High Bridge Road in Newtown, heading in a southwest direction at around 1:37 p.m.

A woman called Monroe Animal Control with a late report at 2 p.m. saying the bear started to cross Hammertown Road, saw her car approaching, and turned back toward the tree line, police said.

Hours later, another late report to animal control came in from someone who saw the bear walking through a backyard on Pepper Street, heading west. Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said the bear was about to cross Pepper Street, before returning to the yard and the tree line, then heading toward Garder Road instead.

At 7:48 p.m., an Echowoods Circle man told police he saw the Black Bear in his backyard, drinking from a Hummingbird feeder that reached 55 inches high against a Cedar tree, according to Risko.

The bear was seen walking west toward Hollow Tree Lane at Northbrook Condominiums.

The last sighting of the day was when a woman reported seeing the Black Bear cross Stillmeadow Circle, near mailboxes, Risko said.

In all cases, officers searched the area and could not find the animal, gave witnesses literature with common cautions for Black Bears and notified the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Department about the sighting.
