Sick Raccoon Euthanized After Three Complaints

When a wild animal like a raccoon is sick, police euthanize it to prevent the spread of rabies to people and pets. One sick raccoon caused a stir on May 12 before an officer caught up with it.

At around 9:49 a.m., a Northwood Road woman reported seeing a sick raccoon on her back deck. A police officer drew his gun on it, but decided not to shoot because of an unsafe background, according to the report.

Police received a second complaint when someone saw the animal on Northwood Road at 4:56 p.m. But an officer who searched the area could not find it.

Then at 6:09 p.m., the raccoon was seen in another yard on Northwood Road, an officer euthanized it and the carcass was removed, police said.

Monroe Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said there was no contact nor exposures between the sick animal and residents and pets.
