St. Jude's Pretzel Fest Raises Funds for Emmaus

Hot pretzels served with mustard, hot dogs and bratwurst on pretzel rolls and sweets made with variations of the salty treat were sold at St. Jude Church's annual Pretzel Fest on Saturday.

"It benefits our Emmaus Retreat held in the spring in Ivoryton, Connecticut," said Janice DeMayo, chairwoman of the Pretzel Fest Committee."

Emmaus is for high school students and is based on scripture when the apostles meet Jesus on the road after he rose from the dead and their eyes are opened as they recognize him for the first time, according to DeMayo.

She said 24 candidates went to Emmaus last spring, adding the weekend is organized by the last group of teenagers who participated in Emmaus weekend. The teen leaders are overseen by adults.

The teenagers organizing Emmaus enhance their leadership skills, DeMayo said.

The Pretzel Fest

DeMayo said St. Jude's Junior Youth Group helped out at the Pretzel Fest Saturday, leading younger children in activities at tables. The event also had a raffle with prizes having a pretzel or fall harvest theme.

"It was very successful," she said. "We had a good turnout. We were over-prepared."
