Best of Monroe: Big Y Chosen as the Best Grocery Store

The supermarket took 44 percent of the vote in this week's reader's poll.

Monroe Patch visitors chose as their supermarket of choice by a wide margin — 44 percent compared to 18 percent for — in this week's .

One comment favoring Big Y was, "I like the 'health tags' that Big Y puts up to show what products are more nutritious than others."

Twenty-four percent shop at both regularly, including Donna Gail, who wrote: "Big Y's produce is so much better than Stop & Shop's, and the bakery is also much better, and the atmosphere is nicer. However, the aisles are crowded at Big Y, there is less selection, and there is no more self-scan checkout. Stop & Shop has overall better prices, in my opinion. So I end up going to both."

Big Y and Stop & Shop are both on Route 111. Many people who live on the Stepney side of town shop in other towns for the convenience at places like the Stop & Shop at Sand Hill Plaza in Newtown. Fourteen percent of respondants say they do their grocery shopping outside Monroe's borders.

One hundred readers responded to the poll and the story garnered 13 comments.

Big Y's produce, bakery and meat department are far superior to Stop & Shop. The staff is generally more personable. I'm glad that the self-checkout registers have been removed because, in actual use, they tend to bottleneck as certain items don't scan properly and a large percentage of the users needed assistance from an actual, breathing cashier. Every automated register costs a human a job. In the Great Depression when Milton Hershey was building his hotel his foreman purchased a steam driven piece of heavy equipment and proudly announced that "It does the work of eighteen men!" Milton told him to sell the equipment and hire eighteen men. We need to look out for each other in these new, hard times.

I would rather Shop Rite put up a store in Monroe. I always go down there. I only go to Big Y or Stop & shop when I don"t have the time to go to the valley.

I agree . I prefer S&S in Newtown because there prices may be slightly better on some items and its closer and easier. I also sometimes stop at Adams in both Shelton and Derby. But we do need another choice here in Monroe. A Shop Rite or someone to help keep prices down would be great.

I go to another grocery store, myself, when I can. I don't like either Big Y or Stop and Shop. Their prices are too high.
