Best of Monroe: Getting Votes is Like Pulling Teeth

Only two commenters told us who their favorite dentist is and both went to Dr. John Fatse.

Monday's Best of Monroe feature asked readers what their favorite dental practice is, but only two told us in the comments. In both cases, the answer was Dr. John Fatse, who has an office at 324 Elm Street.

"I'm very impressed with Dr. Fatse," Dan Keene wrote. "It had been a while since I had been to the dentist and I was nervous about my root canal but Dr. Fatse and his staff made me feel at ease and made sure I was comfortable. Plus, he has special goggle[s] you can wear while the procedure is being done that let[s] you watch TV while he's working on you. Went a long way towards making a root canal almost relaxing ..."

"Absolutely love Dr. Fatse and his staff!" Lisa wrote.

Ha ha - ok I'll give my two cents worth. I won't go into detail because I like to be more positive than critical, but after having experiences with both, I found Dr. Axelrod/Oberhand's office - from office staff to dentists - to be FAR more professional, pleasant and knowledgeable than Fatse's office. I know they are not Monroe, but just "over the town line" on 111 and Corporate Drive and well worth it.

I stopped going to Fatse last year. I got tired of being the first appointment in the morning at 8am, and them just opening the door at right at 8:00 while I am there waiting, then they have to set up and my actual appointment does not start until 15-20 minutes later. The costs here have also gone up, and they always try and sell me on their payment plan insurance. I would be better off putting it on a credit card at those rates. I now go out of town where I receive the same professional work done with all the same bells and whistles, better hours (after 5pm and Saturday appointments available) and charges me less.

Well, either the dentists are terrible, no one likes going to a dentist, or readers could care less for the poll. I know my dentist is way overpriced. I'm looking for a new one myself.

Funny, I mentioned the 8am appointment issue yesterday, and people thought I was crazy. I hated that! One of my biggest pet peeves about that office. I felt so uncomfortable. They'd sit you in that chair and you'd just be hanging out by yourself for 20 minutes, and actually hear Dr. Fatse show up and take his sweet time getting ready.

There's a dentist on Purdee Hill that friends of mine go to and they love him. The office staff is low key and he is very good. I go to a dentist out of town but am thinking of switching to this man. He is located in the white building next to Agway.

I agree about Dr Fatse... and his prices have gone out of sight, they misapplied a check and it went to collection and what ended my relationship forever with him, was going to have a tooth checked and he said out loud, 'I don't know where to start'... goodbye and rip someone else off.

My favorite is Dr. Mark Schwartz near Roberto's Restaurant on 25. His staff is personable, we're almost never kept waiting, and he's great with kids. We started going to him when my son was 2; on that first appointment Dr. Mark spent time explaining what he was doing and demonstrating the water-squirter! He's also very community-minded; every year he picks a charity and donates money from his practice to it. Thanks, Dr. Mark! (from your "favorite patient"!).

Dr Shwartz is great, always puts a smile on my face, (usually with his corny jokes) but he does make you feel relaxed and not afraid of the big bad Dentist, I cant tell about prices...everone and everthing is expensive around Monroe

Yeah... since everyone else is chiming in I don't feel like it's just me... I had two cavities filled which took from 8:00 to 10:45 because they didn't get started until 8:45 and then kept leaving me to go deal with other patients and then coming back. They told me I needed a root canal - which a second opinion from an endodontist confirmed I did not. It was actually a fractured tooth - whole different thing. Dentist told me he'd like to do the root canal because he 'likes a challenge' - didn't instill a lot of confidence! Then I was being 'sold' on a high interest payment plan. If you go into their office, it clear their focus is more on cosmetic dentistry. My new dentist offers a 0% interest payment plan if paid off in a reasonable amount of time, doesn't 'upsell' things I don't need, and makes sure, whenever possible, to only do what my insurance will cover. I would recommend pretty much any dentist before Fatse/Skovic.

Susan - I bet the dentist that told you he likes a challenge was Dr. Scovic.
