To the Editor:
Voting is one of, if not the most, direct way that every voting eligible citizen can influence their government. It is the bedrock principle on which our Republican form of government was founded. When someone chooses to run for office, it is important to see that he or she has exercised that very precious right to cast a vote. Mr. Steve Obsitnik, running for Congress in the 4th Congressional District, has not consistently utilized this right. I question the validity and trustworthiness of Mr. Obsitnik’s intentions to run for Congress if he has not lent his voice to the national conversation that takes place every year between the American people and their elected officials in the ballot box.
Mr. Obsitnik, still to date, has not proposed one single specific bill or idea that he would introduce or pursue if he becomes a member of the United States House of Representatives. Our country is in need of forward thinking, successful, experienced leaders. A prerequisite to becoming this type of leader is, at the very least, exercising one’s right to vote.
I would pose this question to all voters in the 4th Congressional District: Do you want your Representative in Congress to be?:
Steve Obsitnik who:
- Has not told you what he wants to do
- Has not voted in elections
- Belongs to a political party who is running a Vice Presidential candidate who wants to voucherize Medicare
OR
Jim Himes who:
- Has shown consistent leadership by championing provisions of the Jobs Bill and has worked diligently for Wall Street reform in his capacity as a member of the Financial Services Committee
- Embodies progressive thinking for his district and the country by standing up for equal rights for everyone including LGBT Americans
- Impresses upon his colleagues and practices a willingness to work across the aisle and compromise
The answer to this question is the voters’ choice. A choice that will directly effect every citizen of the 17 towns comprising the 4th Congressional District for the next two years. A choice that can move our district and this country forward or stagnate progress.
I will be exercising my right to vote this November 6th. I hope Mr. Obsitnik does the same, although I have my doubts.
