From the Farm: Last Of the Sweet Corn?

What's Memorial Day without sweet corn at the cook out?

In the wake of Irene, 91% of Monroe struggled through life with no electricity. I became one of the lucky ones last night at 7PM when the lights returned after 100 plus hours in the dark.

During those dark hours my family found itself in a different routine. Lugging water to flush, dinner by candle, cooking on the grill and lugging more water. We also found ourselves talking, playing cards and listening to baseball on the radio. While I'll keep my very expensive Connecticut electricity, there have been some positive things to come out of such a difficult time.

While that had nothing to do with farming, I felt it was worth offering a positive note after such a difficult (and for some a still difficult) time.

Sweet corn is a special treat here in New England. Many of our local farmers take great pride in how their fresh picked corn is the highlight of your cookout. Irene knocked over a lot of corn. The supply might be tight this Labor Day weekend. Shop early if your family cookout just won't be the same without it!
