From the Farm — Preparing Your Vegetable Garden For Hurricane Irene

While I'm sure we have all planned our trip to the grocery store, what about preparing your garden?

Have you heard Irene is coming this weekend?

While I'm sure we have all planned our trip to the grocery store, what about preparing your garden? For those folks who don't garden, but LOVE fresh produce, are you prepared for Irene?

This is the worst possible time of year for a hurricane. Tall plants, heavy with fruit staked up in our fields are no match for the high winds of a hurricane.

Here are a couple of quick thoughts on what to do.

1-Gardeners-Pick it!- Harvest your hard work. I've already cleaned anything close to ripe from my tomato plants. We won't be able to save everything, but remember your garden harvest along with your other hurricane preparations.

2-Consumers-Not a gardener, but love fresh vegetables? Load up at your local farm stand or the Monroe Farmers Market tommorrow. After Irene, some things may not be available.

I'm keeping this short because I have to get back to Irene preparation.

Good luck to us all.
