It's been a tough week for deer in Monroe with a number of roadside fatalities. One deer was actually struck by two vehicles and another died from a bullet wound.
A Jockey Hollow Road woman found an injured deer laying under her back deck on Jan. 15. Monroe Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said the animal was suffering from an old gunshot in its abdomen and had to be euthanized.
The worst accident involving a deer occurred in the 40-block of Elm Street at around 5:34 p.m. on Jan. 14.
Police said a woman was driving south on Elm Street when a deer suddenly ran into the roadway. unable to avoid the collision, she struck the deer. Then another woman driving north hit the wounded animal a second time.
The deer died, but Risko said neither driver was injured. Both vehicles were towed.
Police believe a deer found in a backyard on Blue Hills Road Jan. 14 died from injuries after being struck by a vehicle. Other deer fatalities from vehicle strikes include one on Route 110 on Jan. 10, and another on Webb Circle on Jan. 17.
