Animal Reports: Urban Fox Activity and Muskrat Love

See wildlife news and dog reports in this week's Animal Reports.

Urban Fox Activity

A Cross Hill Road woman reported finding a dead animal carcass on the deck in back of her home Tuesday morning. Monroe Animal Control determined it was a duck.

Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said, "Based on the feeding pattern and scat found, it's believed that a fox had been eating the duck during the night in the privacy of its own backyard deck — leaving the carcass to the homeowner. It's normal urban fox activity."

A muskrat was killed when it was struck by a motor vehicle on Fan Hill Road Feb. 23. Monroe Animal Control Officer Ed Risko says drivers should be more careful at this time of year, because it's mating season.

Muskrats are traveling from waterway to waterway and crossing roadways in search of mates, according to Risko.

No Rabies Threat

A dead skunk was found in a yard on Webb Circle Tuesday afternoon. Monroe Animal Control's investigation determined that no family member or pet had exposure to the animal.

Whenever a dead animal is found in a yard, Risko said rabies is a chief concern.
