Animal Reports: Hit and Run Driver Sought

A beagle puppy and a raccoon walking along the street together, six cows found on Purdy Hill Road, a squirrel enters a house and more.

On Sept. 4 an alert resident from Big Horn Road discovered a small, injured dog in the road at 878 Monroe Turnpike about 1 a.m. He immediately transported it to an emergency veterinarian hospital for treatment. The owner was contacted and the dog, after examination and treatment for a minor injury, was able to go home.

The hit-and-run driver has yet to be apprehended. Residents with any information on the accident should call Monroe police. 

That same day another good Samaritan from Hawley Lane saw six cows on Purdy Hill Road, believed they were stuck near a fence by Benedict's Home & Garden, and notified Animal Control. Happily, the bovines were fine and the owner was notified.

More Rescues

On Sept. 1 a resident on Freedman Lane discovered a young Red Tail Hawk on the side of her driveway. Animal Control captured and removed the traumatized bird. It was then transported to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Wildlife in Crisis, in Weston.

The bird is recovering and will be released back into the wild once it is able to fend for itself.

On Sept. 6 a squirrel was rescued from inside the home of a Richards Drive resident after it took a wrong turn on the porch and ended up a visitor. Animal Control responded and encouraged the frightened animal to head for the woods.

On Sept. 7 a raccoon looking for breakfast in the dumpster at 390 Monroe Turnpike was rescued and released by Animal Control.

Wildlife Sightings

Aug 31: A coyote was reported on Wild Horse Court in the morning and another sighting was called in from Cross Hill Road that afternoon. 

Sept. 3: A raccoon was reported in a yard on Monroe Turnpike, but could not be found by Animal Control.

Sept. 4: An East Village Road resident reported seeing a small beagle puppy walking with a raccoon in the roadway. Animal Control was unable to find them after the pair entered the nearby woods.

Lost and Found

Aug. 31: A concerned homeowner reported a small black and white dog wandering on  Flintridge Road. The owner picked up the dog before Animal Control arrived. A few minutes later a Blakeman Drive resident reported a small white poodle mix roaming her yard wearing a collar and tags. Again, the owner retrieved her dog before Animal Control was on scene.

Sept. 2: A homeowner reported seeing a light brown dog in the roadway on Hammertown Road. Animal Control was unable to locate it. 

Sept. 3: The owner of a Hattertown Road canine was given a warning for letting his dog run in the neighborhood. A lost small, black Pomeranian Dog was found and returned to its owner on Monroe Turnpike. 

Sept. 5: A homeowner on Old Castle Drive has lost her cat. Harry, a black short hair is 10 months old, male and neutered.

Ginger, a butterscotch and white tabby, has been missing from her Captains Hill Road home since pre-Irene. She is 10 years old and an indoor cat. Call Animal Control (203) 425-3760 with any information on these missing felines. 

Casualties

Sept. 1: A raccoon was killed sometime in the night by a motor vehicle on Purdy Hill. A carass removal was requested.

Sept. 5: A Bob White Terrace resident reported a very sick raccoon in her yard. The animal had to be put down. No rabies testing was required as there was no interaction with humans or pets.

That same evening a deer was killed on Cutlers Farm Road by two motor vehicles. Hit by the first car, it got up and ran into the second. Residents driving at night are reminded to watch the right side of the road for the glowing eyes of deer about to cross.
