Animal Reports: Parakeet Captured Outside Bank of America

One witness initially thought the exotic bird was an eagle.

Jan. 3, 11:19 a.m. — A Monroe resident reported an Exotic on the loose over on Elm Street near Route 111. By the time Animal Control made the scene, it had vanished. But the witness' description established it had feathers and was airborne. Maybe an eagle, she thought.

At 12:06 p.m. another resident reported capturing a bird in the parking lot of on Monroe Turnpike. It was being held for Animal Control in her Lord & Taylor shopping bag.

The exotic was obviously the same one named in the earlier report. Animal Control responded and received not an exotic, not an eagle, but a young parakeet on scene. It was not known whether the bird made a deposit before being rescued.

Animal Control took custody of the shivering bird, which was impounded and re-warmed.

Identification is being sought by the registered numbers on the budgie's leg band. The numbers will tell Animal Control where it was bought. Monroe's Choice Pet on Monroe Turnpike said it had no missing birds and is aiding in the search for the owner.

Due to the previous donation of a large bird cage by a Monroe resident, the lost bird will have a warm and comfortable home at Animal Control until its owner is found.
