Animal Reports: Unlicensed Dogs, a Wild Turkey and a Sick Fox

Repeat roamers result in tickets and warnings. The town animal shelter needs a donation.

It's been a quiet Christmas holiday week with most pets being kept under their owner's watchful eye and protection. The few that did break away and were sighted by concerned residents, were quickly rounded up by their owners before Animal Control arrived to rescue them.

Wandering on Dec. 23 were two small dogs in the road at Josies Ring Road and Old Zoar Road, and a German Shepherd Dog at Boot Shop Lane and High Ridge Road. On Dec. 24 a beagle pup was reported on Main Street at Stepney Plaza.

On Christmas day at 8:55 a.m. a small beagle was reported in the parking lot of the Camero Mini Mart, 487 Monroe Turnpike. It was picked up and impounded wearing a collar and valid license. The pup was retrieved the next day by the owner after a verbal warning for roaming.

Dec. 26 — A neighbor reported a roaming German Shepherd in her yard. Impounded, it was recognized as one of the town's "frequent fliers" and an unlicensed one. The owner residing on Hawthorne Drive was contacted, given a verbal warning for a roaming dog and a written warning for Failure to License.

Dec. 26, 5:28 p.m. — A Swendsen Drive resident took in a stray Corgi. The pup was impounded the next day. It was recognized as a recent guest of Animal Control. The Barn Hill Road owner was unreachable. Consequently, notice of the impound was posted at the residence. An infraction ticket was issued for a Roaming Dog with a $92 fine. The dog has yet to be retrieved.

Animal Control notified the owner where to pick up her dog, issued a verbal warning for the Roaming Violation and a written warning for Failure to License

Dec. 28,  8:02 a.m. — Two small unlicensed dogs were found north of Garder Hill Road in the High Rock Road area. The Hammertown Road owner was tracked down and given a written warning for Roaming Dog and a Failure to License.  Both pups had valid vaccinations.

Wildlife Encounters

A fox thought to be suffering from mange was spotted up on Flint Ridge Road Dec. 22 and a wild turkey was hit and killed by a motor vehicle at 435 Main Street on Dec. 24.
