Asleep at the Wheel, Driver Causes a 4-Car Accident on Main St.

Freddie Hernandez, 49, of Groton told officers he had fallen asleep while driving south on Main Street in his 2000 Ford at around 9:36 Thursday morning, according to police. Another driver said the Ford swerved across the center line — near Verna Road — and hit his 2012 Nissan head on. Police said the Ford then rolled over and struck a 2011 Honda and a 2011 Toyota before coming to rest on the center line.

The Nissan and the Ford were "heavily damaged" and both drivers were transported to the hospital for evaluation of injuries. The drivers of the Honda and the Toyota were uninjured and their vehicles were "moderately damaged", according to the report.

Hernandez of Poquonnock Road in Groton was issued a misdemeanor summons for failure to drive right, failure to have insurance, and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 21.
