Deer Escape Car Strikes as Vehicles Collide

Monroe Animal Control received two recent reports of drivers crashing their vehicles to avoid hitting deer. Two more animals weren't as lucky. All of the drivers were reportedly okay.

Crossing roads can often prove fatal for deer with bad timing, but on two recent occasions the animals escaped unscathed, while swerving vehicles sustained collisions. In both cases, the drivers avoided serious injuries, according to police.

On March 29, a two-car crash was reported on Main Street when a woman heading south stopped near the intersection of Crescent Place and Victoria Drive to avoid hitting several deer and her car was rear-ended by another vehicle, police said.

Monroe Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said no cars were towed after the accident, which occurred around 11:25 p.m.

Then on March 30 a one-car crash was reported on Turkey Roost Road at around 2:46 a.m.

Risko said a man driving north swerved at the intersection with Cahill Road to avoid several deer in the roadway, and his vehicle crossed the south lane, went off the shoulder and struck a curb before coming to rest against a stone wall.

The vehicle was towed due to damage to the left side, front and rear bumpers, according to police.

Luck Runs Out for Two Deer

Not all deer crossings ended well during the last week of March. Two deer died in a two car accident in the 700-block of Main Street at around 9:28 p.m. on March 31.

Police said two cars were heading north on Main Street when two deer jumped out into the road. One ran into the driver side of the first vehicle and the other deer was struck head on by the car behind it, according to the report.

One of the deer, a 130-pound doe, died from its injuries and the other could not be found, Risko said.
