In another roadside casualty, a deer was killed after being hit by a vehicle in the 100-block of Barn Hill Road on July 15 and a crash report was filed with the DEEP.

Dogs Attack Teen

A 13-year-old male was bitten by his friend's two German Shepherds during a visit on Porters Hill Road on July 15, according to report. His father brought him to a doctor for medical care. Police said there were three wounds and no sutures were required.

Both dogs were vaccinated, but a 14 day quarantine to their property followed by a veterinary examination was ordered as a precaution. There were no previously reported incidents with the dogs, police said, so the owner was given a written warning for a dog bite.

Snake's Not Poisonous

An Historic Drive resident reported seeing a brown snake in his yard July 16 and wanted Monroe Animal Control to identify it. The homeowner looked at a Connecticut Snake Guide with an officer and it was described as a nonpoisonous snake, according to the report.

Dog vs. Dog

A Pequot Court woman was walking her two dogs on a lead on Secret Hollow Road Wednesday morning when she saw a neighbor walking his three dogs. Police said two of his dogs started fighting amongst themselves, so the woman turned to leave the area when one of the dogs broke free and charged at her pets, attacking and injuring one of them.

Both dogs involved in the incident were already vaccinated. No previous complaints were made against the Secret Hollow Road man's dog, so he was issued a Complaint Advisory Notice for nuisance.

Homeless Starlings

Four baby starlings were brought to a State Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator for care on July 16 after their nest was disturbed during the cleaning of furnace pipes at a home on Cutlers Farm Road.

Dogs Kill a Woodchuck

Two dogs attacked and killed a woodchuck in their yard on Barn Hill Road on July 16. Police said both dogs were validly licensed and vaccinated. Nevertheless, a booster shot and a 45-day observation was ordered for each dog as a precaution.

Police said the State Lab in Hartford's test results of the woodchuck were negative for rabies.

Sick or Injured Skunk

A sick or injured skunk was reported in a yard on Flint Ridge Road on July 17. The baby skunk was dead when the officer arrived. No exposures nor testing was required.

Fox Activity

Fox activity was reported on Shawnee Lane on July 12. Animal Control determined it was normal behavior and gave the resident who called common cautions and a Hazing PSA.

Thanks for the Fridge

Monroe Animal Control expressed its gratitude to the Ioannucci family of Hattertown Road, who donated a full-size refrigerator to the Monroe Animal Shelter on July 15.
