Police Reports Served with Eggs, Ketchup and Mustard

The following information was supplied by the Monroe Police Department. No arrested person is guilty until so judged in a court of law.

Accident Leads to DUI

An Aspetuck Lane man was arrested for DUI after police said he lost control of his '98 Ford Taurus on Purdy Hill Road and struck a tree at around 8:27 p.m. on Oct. 30.

Police said a woman was eating dinner when she heard the collision and called them.

The driver, Branden Hylwa, 25, told police he had gone out to get ice cream and lost control of his car on the wet leaves, according to the report. Police said Hylwa had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and bloodshot eyes and that he told them he had drank one glass of wine.

Field sobriety tests determined Hylwa was under the influence, leading to his arrest, police said, adding that he refused to participate in breath tests at headquarters.

Hylwa was charged with DUI and failure to drive in the proper lane and released on $500 bond for a Nov. 13 court date.

A Smash & Grab

Cartons of cigarettes were stolen in the burglary of the Prushko Shell station at 536 Monroe Turnpike on Oct. 27.

Police said the alarm was activated at 6:17 a.m. and officers found a cement block lying on the ground with broken glass from the top of the door to the business.

Identity Theft

A Williamsburg Drive man told police Oct. 25 that someone ran up a $508.75 bill on four cell phones fraudulently bought in his name. 

AT&T would only tell him that the phones had been activated at a Wal-Mart, according to police.

Stolen Landscaping Equipment

A landscaper reported the theft of thousands of dollars worth of equipment from a locked trailer on his property in the 800-block of Main Street on Nov. 3.

Stolen were four Stihl blowers valued at a total of $2,000, a $1,000 Stihl chainsaw, a $750 Husqvarna chainsaw, a $700 Stihl chainsaw, a $150 pulley used for tree work and a $100 portorap used to climb trees.

The owner told police that the locks were missing and that there appeared to be no forced entry to the trailer. All employees have access to the trailer so they can get equipment to do jobs, police said.

A Shoplifting Investigation

A loss prevention officer at Big Y supermarket, 535 Monroe Turnpike, saw a couple stealing baby formula on Oct. 19 while he reviewed surveillance footage. After attempting to identify the shoplifting suspects by working with loss prevention officers at other Big Y stores in the area, Monroe's store reported the thefts to police on Oct. 31.

The officer believes it was a 26-year-old New Fairfield man and a Brookfield woman, 31, and provided video to police, according to the report.

Police said two cans of Similac (total $55.98), two cans of Enfamil Infant Formula (total $31.98), two cans of Enfamil Pro Sobee (total $33.98) and a $15.99 can of Similac baby formula were stolen.

Attempted Theft?

A Great Ring Road man reported hearing a noise outside at 3:40 a.m. on Nov. 4 and told police he looked out his window to find his car door was open. He checked the vehicle and nothing appeared missing, according to police, who said the owner told them he had locked it earlier.

Graffiti Reports

A school custodian told police on Oct. 31 that someone covered the main sign at Jockey Hollow Middle School, 375 Fan Hill Road, with eggs, ketchup and mustard. He told police he could wash it off, but just wanted to bring it to their attention, according to the report.

Police said an officer on patrol at 9:57 a.m. on Oct. 26 found that black spray paint had been used to draw a large cross and a phallic symbol and to write "YOLO", which stands for "You only live once", on the windows in back of a building at 618 Main Street.

Domestic Incidents

A 27-year-old Boot Shop Lane woman was arrested in a domestic incident Nov. 2 for allegedly slapping one of her sisters, 18, across the face because she was upset with her sisters' frustration over the power outage.

She was charged with disorderly conduct and risk of injury to a minor and released on $1,000 bond for a Nov. 5 court date.

Police said the victim's face was red and swollen, adding that a child was present during the incident, leading to the risk of injury charge.

A 39-year-old Garder Road man, angry to come home to a big mess in his home, allegedly picked up and smashed a toaster oven at his girlfriend's feet, according to police, who said the incident escalated into a pushing and shoving match.

The man was charged with one count of disorderly conduct and bond was set at $250 for a Nov. 5 court date.

Boat Washes Ashore

An abandoned boat drifted to shore at the Lake Zoar Beach Club & Family Marina on Oct. 27. Police said the 16-foot-boat's interior was stripped out, adding the vessel had no identifying marks.

First Light, which owns the Stevenson Dam, said it would retrieve the boat and dispose of it.
