Employee Extinguishes a Small Fire at Big Y

No customers were inside at the time, but approximately 20 employees were evacuated as firefighters inspected the building to ensure the fire had not spread.

The following report is from Monroe Fire Department spokesman Kevin Catalano:

Around 6:20 am Thursday, firefighters were called to the Big Y market at 535 Monroe Turnpike for a reported fire in the building. A lighting fixture in a bakery display case caught fire but was extinguished by an employee using a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

No customers were inside at the time, but approximately 20 employees were evacuated.

There was a moderate amount of smoke in the building when firefighters arrived, particularly in the bakery and produce areas. Volunteer firefighters from the Monroe, Stepney, and Stevenson fire departments checked to make sure the fire had not extended and then ventilated smoke from the building using several fans for approximately 30 minutes.

Four fire engines and a ladder truck responded under the direction of Monroe Fire Chief Bill Davin. The health inspector was called to determine the extent to which food items in the affected area must be discarded.
