Driver Charged With Evading, Engaging Police in Pursuit and DUI

Police say a motorist dragged his front bumper after an accident and engaged officers in pursuit before being arrested for drunken driving.

The following information was supplied by the Monroe Police Department. No arrested person is guilty until so judged in a court of law.

Officers searching the area after being notified by Newtown police about a 2010 Honda Civic evading the scene of an accident on Bagburn Hill Road at around 5:38 p.m. Wednesday spotted a vehicle fitting the description on Wheeler Road. Police said the Honda had heavy front end damage and was dragging the front bumper under it.

When officers got behind the car and turned on the cruiser's lights and siren, the motorist allegedly continued driving at slow rate of speed, turning down Deerfield Lane where he pulled into his driveway and opened the garage door.

Police said the driver, Edward J. Brennan, 69, had the strong odor of alcoholic beverage on him, bloodshot eyes and appeared confused. He told officers he had two drinks at Maggie McFly’s in Southbury, denied being involved in an accident and seemed oblivious as to why his vehicle was damaged, according to police.

When asked why he did not stop when police signaled him to, Brennan said he did not see or hear them, according to the report.

After field sobriety tests determined Brennan was under the influence, he was charged with engaging police in pursuit, evading responsibility and DUI, police said. He posted $1,000 bond and has an Oct. 8 court date.

Officers went to Bagburn Hill Road and determined that the Honda hit a bridge abutment near Newtown, but on the Monroe side of the line.
