Firefighters Make Quick Work of Barn Hill Blaze

The fire, which began just after midnight, was extinguished within 10 minutes.

Monroe volunteer firefighters were called to 264-266 Barn Hill Road just after midnight on Monday when the residents smelled smoke and began to experience problems with their power.

Just as firefighters arrived, flames began to roll across the ceiling of a hallway and closet area in an in-law apartment on the second floor of the home. Monroe firefighters, with assistance from Stevenson firefighters, were able to keep the fire contained to the area of origin and had it fully extinguished within ten minutes.

However, firefighters remained on scene until 2 a.m. performing overhaul and ventilation. All of the residents escaped unharmed and no firefighters were injured.

Monroe Fire Chief William Davin credited first arriving firefighters with making an excellent stop before the fire spread into the remainder of the large home. Davin estimated the damage, which was primarily related to smoke, to be approximately $50,000. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and the Monroe Fire Marshal's Office is continuing its investigation.

The residents were able to make arrangements to stay elsewhere for the night.
