Police, Firefighters Pull a Man from a House Fire on Squire Road

A fire broke out in the second floor bedroom of a home at 24 Squire Road in the Barn Hill section of Monroe around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. A first-arriving volunteer firefighter and three police officers pulled an unconscious man downstairs and out to the front lawn where he was treated by Monroe paramedics and EMTs. A woman and four children escaped on their own, while another firefighter carried the family dog out to safety.

The man pulled from the fire regained consciousness before being transported to the hospital but the extent of his injuries are unknown. A volunteer firefighter was also administered oxygen at the scene by AMR paramedics, but did not require hospitalization.

The fire was contained to the master bedroom and was quickly extinguished, but smoke filled the entire second floor of the roughly 3,500 square foot home.

Four fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue truck from the Monroe, Stepney, and Stevenson Volunteer Fire departments and three ambulances responded to the fire. All emergency units had left the scene by 4:15 a.m.

Monroe Volunteer Fire Chief William Davin commanded the fire scene.

The home's main living floor was not affected by the fire and it is expected that the family can return to living in the home fairly soon. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the investigation is being handled by the Monroe Fire Marshal's office.
