Identity Thief Wipes Out Monroe Woman's Checking Account

An identity thief spent an Elm Street woman's entire checking account, while using her debit card number online, according to police.

On May 17, she used People's United Bank's automated phone system to verify an automatic payroll deposit to her checking account, police said.

Then on May 18, police said the woman tried to make a small purchase with her debit card on the way home from work, but was denied.

Police said the bank informed her that she had a zero balance in her account.

A transaction report showed four online purchases made on May 17, including transactions for $609.95, $33.94, $57.93 and $572.45, according to the report.

Police said the report did not specify what the charges were for and where they were made.

The woman came to headquarters on May 18 to report the incident, so the bank and police can investigate.
