Monroe Man Avoids Falling Prey to a Scam on Craigslist

A Cross Hill Road man avoided falling victim to a fraud on Craigslist, but shared information on the scam with police on June 6 to spread public awareness.

The resident advertised car wheels for sale for $899 and received an email from a person from California who wanted to buy them. But the buyer sent him a check for $3,400 and asked him to send a check for the difference to someone at an address in Charlotte, N.C., for the shipping costs.

Suspicious, police said the resident showed the $3,400 check he received to staff members at a People's United Bank branch in Fairfield, who confirmed it was a fraudulent check.
