Monroe Man Receives a $4,500 Check Without Doing a Thing

Sound too good to be true? It is. The scam was reported to police.

A Weather Vane Hill resident was surprised to receive a $4,500 check in the mail from "Gallery of Machines", Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Sept. 11. Though he had never done any work for this company before, he told police the check was made payable to him.

He called the company about the check and was told it is a scam and not to try to cash it. Police said he didn't attempt to cash it, adding no money was lost.

The resident contacted police to report the scheme, according to the report.
