Monroe Police Warn About Phone Scam Offering New Car

Caller tried to scam a Monroe woman but she wasn't fooled.

A Monroe resident notified police of a phone scam in which the caller tells the homeowner they’ve won a new car but must first pay to redeem the prize.

The local woman filed a complaint with Monroe police Saturday afternoon after she had received multiple telephone calls at her house, which were showing on the caller ID as coming from an “876” area code.

When she did answer one call, the caller advised her that she had won a Mercedes Benz, but would have to pay $300 in order to redeem the prize. The caller gave instructions to the complainant to meet him at Walgreens with the money.

Knowing this was a common scam, the complainant hung up the caller and informed police.

The complainant described the caller as a male with a heavy foreign accent.
