Monroe Vigilante Arrested for Chasing Down Speeding Car

Man charged with breach of peace after cornering speeders and making gestures toward a gun.

A Monroe man tired of people driving too fast through his neighborhood went the vigilante route last week, chasing down a speeding car and motioning toward a holstered weapon to keep them pinned in a cul-du-sac.

According to police, a 19-year-old Monroe man was driving a Volkswagen on Northbrook Drive on June 10 with two passengers — an 18-year-old Monroe man and a 20-year-old Shelton woman — when a man in a grey Jeep pulled up next to them, yelling that they were speeding and needed to slow down.

The Volkswagen attempted to pull away but the driver of the Jeep, later identified as David Kuban, 30, of Boulder Ridge Road, continued to drive alongside. The Volkswagen turned onto Rolling Ridge Road in another attempt to get away, discovering only a dead end.

According to the victims in the Volkswagen, Kuban blocked their vehicle in with his own, got out of the Jeep and put his hands on the hood of their car, making verbal threats.

At one point, Kuban put his “hand in his pocket,” making them believe he had a gun, they told police.

While the victims were speaking with officers, Kuban drove up and admitted to following the Volkswagen due to concerns about their driving, adding that he was “fearful that they were going to hit him with their vehicle,” according to the arrest report.

He also admitted to reaching into his pocket for his gun, however it was never removed or displayed and he had a valid permit to carry.

Kuban was charged with breach of peace and released on $500 bond pending his arraignment Wednesday in Bridgeport Superior Court.
