Update: One Driver Injured in Two-Car-Accident on Route 111

Update, 9:41 a.m.: A 24-year-old Monroe woman was backing out of her driveway in her '98 Chrysler in the 600-block of Route 111 at around 6 p.m. Thursday, when a 23-year-old Trumbull man heading north on Monroe Turnpike in his '97 Volkswagen struck her on her driver's side door, according to police.

Police said firefighters had to removed the damaged door to get the woman out of her car.

Both drivers were evaluated by EMS volunteers. The man refused medical treatment and the woman was taken to the hospital for what police believe to be minor injuries.

The man was issued a summons for driving with a license under suspension and the woman was issued a written warning for failure to grant the right of way from a private driveway.

Firefighters had to extricate an injured driver trapped in a sedan following a two-car-accident in the 600-block of Monroe Turnpike, between Route 110 and Jeanette Street, shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

Police, fire, and EMS responded to the scene and firefighters quickly removed the driver's door from the sedan to allow EMS to access the patient, who was transported to the hospital by Monroe EMS.

The crash shut down Monroe Turnpike completely in both directions for about an hour. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Police, fire, and EMS personnel had also responded to a two car accident just south of this accident scene on Tuesday morning around 7:40 a.m., which also caused injuries and traffic delays.

Monroe Police are investigating the cause of both accidents.
