A man called Monroe Animal Control at 10:06 a.m. on Feb. 22 to report seeing a small owl perched on a trash container near the People's United Bank drive-up window, because he thought it was a baby that had fallen out of a nest.
However, Animal Control Officer Ed Risko said no animals give birth at this time of year, so it was most likely a Saw-whet owl, which only grows up to 8 inches tall as an adult.
The owl was gone by the time an officer arrived, and Risko said it's common and possible that the owl flew into the side of a vehicle, then perched on the trash container to recover from the collision before taking off.
